Recommendations to consider
when creating a business scorecard:
1. Keep it simple – the business
scorecard is a snapshot of overall performance
results.
2. Objectives should be created using SMART criteria
(specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and
timely).
3. The primary team may experience difficulty
letting go of managing business concerns until
all teams develop supporting scorecards. The primary
team needs to feel confident that teams are effectively
managing business performance.
Steps to follow when creating a business scorecard:
1. Identify key focus areas that every team in
the organization must support and understand (i.e.
quality, cost, safety, customer service, etc.).
2. Brainstorm objectives for key areas the primary
team is responsible for (directly or indirectly).
Select at least one objective for each focus area.
3. Determine a target measurement for each objective
to record on the scorecard. With an established
target measurement, teams can identify current
objective status against goals.
4. Assign key focus areas to primary team members.
They will assume the task of data collection and
apply it to the scorecard. Be sure an owner is
assigned responsibility for each objective.
